Hallstatt

So perfect China built a copy. The 7,000-year-old original is still better.

Hallstatt sits on the edge of Lake Hallstatt in the Austrian Alps, about an hour and a quarter by car from Salzburg. If you come by train, the station is across the lake and a small ferry brings you over to the village. Spring and autumn are the best times, and winter is magical and quiet. The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A postcard you can actually walk into

People have mined salt in the mountain above Hallstatt for around 7,000 years, which makes it one of the oldest inhabited places in Europe. The village grew on the tiny strip of land between the mountain and the lake, so the houses are stacked up the slope, with the church spire right at the waterline.

It's so famous that a full-size copy of it was built in China. Nothing beats standing in the real one early in the morning, when the lake is like glass and the mountains are reflected upside down.
