Palawan is the long, thin island in the far west of the Philippines, about an hour's flight from Manila. For the lagoons, base yourself in El Nido or Coron. For the underground river, stay near Puerto Princesa. Come in the dry season, roughly December to May, when the sea is calm and the water is at its clearest.

Water this blue shouldn't be real

Palawan is what happens when jungle-covered limestone cliffs meet the sea. The rock has been carved into hidden lagoons, some only reachable by kayak or by swimming through a gap in the cliff. From the air the water goes from deep blue to a shade of turquoise that looks edited. It isn't.

It also has one of the strangest places in Asia: a river that runs for kilometres through a cave and flows straight out into the sea. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was voted one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.
